Peat moss is a natural, organic material made up of partially decomposed plant matter—mainly sphagnum moss—harvested from peat bogs. Peat bogs develop over long periods as organic matter partially decomposes. Due to the waterlogged environment, decomposition occurs under anaerobic (oxygen-free) conditions. These low-oxygen conditions significantly slow the breakdown process, allowing peat moss to remain preserved for an extended time—often indefinitely.
Peat moss is lightweight, highly absorbent, and slightly acidic, making it ideal for improving soil structure, retaining moisture, and supporting seed starting or seedlings.
- It retains moisture well, helping seeds stay consistently hydrated.
- It has a fine, loose texture that allows delicate roots to grow easily.
- It's sterile (free from weed seeds and pathogens), reducing the risk of disease during germination.

KEKKILA SEEDLING SUBSTRATE
Premium peat moss sourced from carefully selected sites in the Baltic region forms the foundation of Kekkila’s growing substrates. Depending on requirements, this base is blended with peat from the Baltic States, Sweden, Finland, and other regions. These high-quality raw materials can be further enriched with specially selected additives such as clay, sand, and quality-tested bark humus. Additionally, special composts, finely ground lime, and trace elements are incorporated. Every mix is precisely formulated to meet the specific needs of each type of cultivated plant.
Suitable for sowing, taking cuttings, raising seedlings, and pricking out. This substrate has a loose structure with a low proportion of added compost, making it ideal for salt-sensitive plants.
You can sow up to 5000 seeds with the 70 litre Kekkila Seedling Substrate!!
This fine peat moss is;
- Ideally suited for flower seeds and seedlings.
- Made from high-quality peat with carefully selected additives.
- Consistently homogeneous and of premium quality, thanks to intensive mixing processes that ensure uniform distribution.
